The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has hailed the resignation of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, describing the move as “honourable, wise, and timely.”

Naijaonpoint recalls that Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State, stepped down from his position on Friday, reportedly due to health concerns.

Reacting to the development in a post on his 𝕏 handle (formerly Twitter), Obi commended the APC chieftain for prioritising his health and well-being, stating that the decision was one other ailing political officeholders should emulate.

“With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation,” Obi wrote.

He said Ganduje’s resignation has set a new precedent in Nigerian politics, urging other political leaders battling health challenges to follow suit.

“By this exemplary action, Dr. Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him,” he added.

Obi further highlighted the pressing need for physically and mentally agile leaders in Nigeria, saying the country’s challenges require the full attention and energy of those in leadership.

“We can no longer afford the burden of medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments. These things are taking a serious toll on our development,” he warned.

Obi concluded his statement by wishing Ganduje well in retirement.

“May God Almighty grant Dr. Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement,” he said.
