A United States lawmaker has raised a fresh alarm over the continued killing of Christians in Nigeria and revealed plans to push the White House toward concrete action.
The warning comes amid renewed concerns in Washington over what some lawmakers describe as targeted violence against Christian communities across parts of Nigeria.
The issue is now gaining stronger attention at the highest levels of the US government.
US Congressman, Rep. Riley Moore, disclosed that he would soon engage the White House on possible steps America could take to address the situation. He made this known in a public statement shared on his verified X account on Tuesday.
Moore’s comments followed remarks by Catholic Bishop Robert Barron, who recently spoke about the scale and impact of attacks on Christians in Nigeria.
The bishop highlighted the suffering of faith-based communities and called for stronger international response.
Reacting to the bishop’s comments, the US lawmaker said: “Thank you Bishop Barron, for shedding a light on how our brothers and sisters in Christ are being persecuted for their faith in Nigeria.
“Thanks for the shout-out. You’re right, I will be briefing the White House on this topic very soon to give them options on how to protect Christians in Nigeria.
“In addition to our recently passed FY26 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs, NSRP, bill, which protects US security, upholds humanity, and safeguards religious freedom, the House Appropriations Committee will soon deliver a report to President Donald Trump on the situation in Nigeria – facts, oversight, and leadership.”
Moreover, Moore’s statement signals a possible shift from public concern to policy engagement. His planned briefing is expected to outline practical options for the US government, including diplomatic pressure, security cooperation, and religious freedom protections.
The reference to the FY26 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs bill suggests that Nigeria’s security challenges are already being discussed within broader US foreign policy and funding frameworks.
Lawmakers believe these tools can be used to demand accountability and protect vulnerable populations.
The planned report to President Donald Trump by the House Appropriations Committee is also expected to focus on documented incidents, federal oversight, and leadership responsibilities.
