Get $5,000 From Africa Institute Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2024

The Africa Institute is pleased to announce the call for applications for the fourth cohort of the Global Africa Translation Fellowship for the year 2024.

This initiative falls under the African Languages and Translation Program and aims to facilitate the translation of significant works from the African continent and its diaspora into English or Arabic, with consideration for other languages.

Grant Details:

The fellowship offers a grant of up to $5,000 to scholars from the Global South to support non-residential translation projects. The goal is to enhance accessibility to important texts in African and African Diaspora studies worldwide.

Funding ranges from $1,000 to $5,000 based on the project’s quality and scope. Projects may include retranslations of classic texts, previously untranslated works, poetry, prose, or critical theory collections. Both ongoing and new projects feasible within the grant period are eligible.

Application Procedure:

Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • A two-page CV/résumé detailing institutional affiliation, educational background, including the highest degree attained, and significant publications.
  • A two-page narrative outlining the proposed translation project, its significance, rationale for re-translation (if applicable), and projected completion dates.
  • A 4–5-page (double-spaced) sample of both the original text(s) and its translation.
  • Documentation of the work’s copyright status, including a copyright notice from the original text and a letter from the copyright holder indicating the availability of English language rights.
  • All application materials should be merged into a single PDF file named according to the format: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf. Submissions must be emailed as attachments to [email protected] with the subject heading: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application.

The deadline for applications is 1 June 2024.
