Getafe have opened negotiations with Real Sociedad to secure a loan move for Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq, Soccernet.football reports.

Head coach José Bordalás is actively searching for a reliable striker to bolster his squad in January, and Sadiq has emerged as a key target.

According to reports from Onda Vasca via Eldesmarque, discussions between the two clubs are focused on a temporary move without an option to buy. The 27-year-old has struggled for game time under Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil this season and has failed to recapture the form that once made him a prolific scorer.

Sadiq’s tenure at Real Sociedad has been far from ideal. After joining the Basque outfit in the summer of 2022 for €20 million as a replacement for Alexander Isak, the Nigerian forward has managed just four goals and two assists in 50 appearances, averaging under 40 minutes per game. A serious knee injury early in his Sociedad career further derailed his momentum.

In stark contrast, his previous stint with UD Almería in the Segunda Division saw him thrive, netting 43 goals and providing 19 assists in 84 matches. These numbers made him one of the most sought-after forwards in Spain, but his transition to Sociedad has been riddled with challenges.

Getafe, despite their financial constraints, are exploring the possibility of bringing Sadiq on board to address their attacking deficiencies. Real Sociedad, meanwhile, seem eager to offload the striker to create room in their squad and manage their wage bill effectively.

While Getafe appears to be the frontrunner, Sadiq’s future remains uncertain.

Previous interest from Sevilla fell through due to the high financial demands involved in securing the player. For now, it looks likely that the Nigerian forward will move on a short-term basis, as Sociedad weigh their options to recover some of the significant investment made in him.
