Getafe manager José Bordalás has moved to cool speculation around Christantus Uche’s future after the Nigerian midfielder produced a dazzling display in their 2-0 win over Celta Vigo on the opening weekend of La Liga, Footynaija.com reports.
Christantus Uche delivered a masterclass on the opening weekend of La Liga as Getafe stunned Celta Vigo away from home, showing why he remains one of Europe’s most sought-after young stars.
The 22-year-old Super Eagles star, who has been linked all summer with a Premier League move, was the heartbeat of Getafe’s attack, assisting Adrian Liso for the opener before sealing the win with a moment of individual brilliance.
His display earned him the Man of the Match award, as fans and pundits alike questioned how Europe’s elite clubs have allowed him to remain in Spain.

Uche’s performance came despite swirling transfer rumours. Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Atletico Madrid had all been linked with him after a standout debut campaign, yet no concrete offer materialised.
Getafe’s president admitted earlier in the summer that the youngster was open to a move abroad, particularly to England, but for now he remains the club’s talisman, wearing the number 10 shirt.

Head coach José Bordalás praised the Nigerian after the victory, making clear where the club stands on his immediate future.
“He’s (Uche’s) our player, we have complete confidence in him. We knew he was going to be an important player today, and that’s what happened. We’re not surprised by his level; he’s currently a Getafe player, and we’re confident he can stay here,” said Bordalás as per AS.
1+1 – Christantus Uche is the first Getafe player to both score and assist in a LaLiga game since Christantus Uche himself against Real Sociedad in January 2025, and the second to achieve this feat with the club on MD 1 of the competition, after Riki vs Espanyol in 2005. The coach also highlighted the significance of the result, given the circumstances.
“It’s worth double or triple that. There’s a 17-year-old kid, players who’ve made their debut in the First Division, another like Ismael who was playing in the Second Division, players out of position. We’ve had to adapt, and the win is very important. Congratulations to the lads because it’s going to be a tough year, and we have to try to make sure what’s happening doesn’t happen again. We can’t approach a La Liga game in this way; it’s bad for football.”
In his debut campaign in La Liga last season, Uche excelled with four goals and six assists in 33 matches.
