Gift Orban: Super Eagles invitee arrives in Germany to finalise transfer away from Lyon

Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban has arrived in Germany to finalise a transfer deal that will see him depart Olympique Lyon during the upcoming January transfer window, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian forward joined Lyon last year following an impressive spell at KAA Gent, which prompted the Ligue 1 side to secure his services for a fee in the region of €14 million, including bonuses.

However, Orban struggled to adapt to life in France, managing just five goals in 21 appearances. As a result, he was deemed surplus to requirements by the club.

While several top European clubs were reportedly interested in the Togo-born Nigerian, Hoffenheim emerged as a potential lifeline. Reports indicate that Orban has now arrived in Germany to finalise a move to the Bundesliga side, currently placed 15th in the league standings.

Transfer specialists Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto have confirmed that only minor details remain before the deal is completed. Hoffenheim is reportedly focused on concluding the formalities with the 21-year-old striker.

Lyon’s demands were met after several rounds of negotiations, with Hoffenheim’s final offer believed to be around €10 million.

This represents a loss for the Ligue 1 club, who signed Orban from KAA Gent for €12 million just a year ago, with the total fee eventually rising to €14 million due to bonuses.

Despite competition from RC Lens, Hoffenheim’s offer quickly stood out as the most compelling option, paving the way for Orban to make his Bundesliga debut in the new year.
