Glen Powell is no longer involved in a Captain Planet reboot, the actor shared with ScreenRant. Based on the popular 1990s cartoon about a superhero who fights against polluters and others who harm the Earth, Powell first got involved in a Captain Planet movie in 2016. As recently as 2023, Powell shared he still wanted to do the Captain Planet movie, .
Since then, there hasn’t been a lot of news about a Captain Planet movie, which also has Leonardo DiCaprio attached as a producer. Though it was announced earlier this year that Netflix was developing a Captain Planet live-action series, also with DiCaprio attached as a producer.
However, while sitting down with Powell for this new Hulu original series Chad Powers, ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan couldn’t let the actor get away without getting an update on the Captain Planet movie. Unfortunately, the news wasn’t great.
“Ash Crossan: Glen, I will not let your Captain Planet script die, and I think the only thing I can do from this side of the table is to keep bringing it up in interviews. What do you need? What do I do?
Glen Powell: That one’s no longer in my hands. Yeah, they’re going to take it and run with it, but yeah, I wish them the best on that one. I’ve been a passionate fan of Captain Plant since I was a kid. Obviously, some things that you make in this town find their way quickly, and some of ’em don’t, and there was a lot of rights holders and things like that around it. A lot of opinions, so I’m no longer the guy running with the baton, but they’re going to make something great, I’m sure.”
So while there is still the potential that a Captain Planet movie is eventually made, Powell is not likely to be involved.
What This Means For The Captain Planet Movie
Powell said in his answer, sometimes Hollywood projects just don’t come together, even ones with star power like Powell and DiCaprio attached.
What is interesting is that DiCaprio is also involved in the Captain Planet TV series that is in the works. It’s hard to know if only one of the projects was chosen to move forward, or if there is still a chance for a Captain Planet movie in the future.
Like Powell noted, there appears to be a lot of opinions on reviving this franchise for a new generation.
Our Take On The Captain Planet Movie
As a big fan of Glen Powell, I’m bummed that he didn’t get to see the Captain Planet movie through, as he appeared quite passionate about it. Outside of a small role as “Trade #1” in The Dark Knight Rises, we haven’t seen Powell get to play in the superhero world. Who knows if or when that may change. At least he’s keeping busy with Chad Powers and the upcoming movie The Running Man.
Then there’s the Captain Planet movie itself. I remember watching that series as a kid, so it would definitely be a fun nostalgia trip to see it come to the big screen. Here’s hoping that it’s not off the table yet.
