The end of an era has come for the world’s greatest kaiju. Over the past 70 years, fans have watched Godzilla reign supreme as the King of the Monsters, but no amount of power can make the behemoth immortal. A new report just confirmed the Godzilla we all know and love is now dead. But if you think that is it for the iconic monster, you are dead wrong.
Today, Godzilla’s surprising death was confirmed by the team at IDW. The brand, which is overseeing the monster’s new Kai-Sei era, announced Godzilla #6 will see the monster die. Written by Tim Seely, the new Godzilla issue will mark history for the movie monster as the Kai-Sei Era plans to rebirth Godzilla, but the resurrected kaiju will not be like the one you remember.
Why Godzilla Must Die For The Kai-Sei Era To Thrive
As confirmed by IDW, the Kai-Sei Era plans to bring its own take on Godzilla to life following the monster’s death in issue six. The creature will bring its new Kai-Sei Energy transformation to life, revealing what may be the kaiju’s most powerful form to date. This form will be revealed in Godzilla #7, so fans will not have to wait long to reunite with the iconic monster.
“Allowing IDW to “kill” Godzilla only six issues in the new Kai-sei Era series just goes to show how much trust Toho International has in both rock-star writer Tim Seeley and Eisner-winning Godzilla editor, Jake Williams. These types of comic events cannot be handled lightly,” Aaron John Gregory, Godzilla Product Development Manager, shared in a release regarding the icon’s rebirth.
“In ’92, as a young teenager, I waited in a long line to buy a copy of Superman 75, “The Death of Superman”, and was blown away by the consequential brutality in those pages. I can tell you that the incredible team behind our new Kai-sei era of Godzilla have delivered on that level; with all the electrifying excitement and pummeling panache you’ve come to expect in this series. You may need a kaiju-sized Kleenex.”
Clearly, the death of Godzilla is going to rattle the kaiju’s grand mythos, and IDW brought in a big name to usher in his emotional farewell.
The Death of Godzilla Recruits Comic Legend Dan Jurgens
If the cover art for Godzilla #6 looks familiar to you, well — you are likely at DC diehard. IDW and the team at Toho brought in Dan Jurgens to do the art as it pays tribute to one of the most famous comic deaths to date. Godzilla #6 pays clear homage to Superman #75, the best-selling DC Comic from 1992 that ushered in the death of Superman.
This cover art not only brings in Jurgens for the art, but Breet Breeding was commissioned for the inking while Gregg Whitmore oversees color. The art is a bold declaration of Godzilla’s untimely death, and the Kai-Sei Era is swinging hard with its arrival. After all, it isn’t every day you see Godzilla kick the bucket.
“When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” Jurgens shared. “I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great fun to be able to contribute!”
If you want to bring home this historic comic, it will make its debut on January 7, 2026. The preorder deadline for Godzilla #6 is November 24.
