The ever-expanding Godzilla lore welcomes a new batch of characters and higher stakes than ever. Seventy-one years after the King of the Monsters’ movie debut, Godzilla’s popularity is only continuing to rise. IDW’s Kai-Sei Era comics include the titles Godzilla, Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, and Starship Godzilla, each exploring drastically different aspects of Godzilla lore and unique genres.
As IDW’s Godzilla introduces a variety of heroes dealing with Kai-Sei energy on Earth, the other two titles venture into far-off areas. Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone takes place in the ravaged, creature-ridden lands of Seattle. Meanwhile, Starship Godzilla traverses the distant reaches of outer space.

Enter the Deadzone! The mysterious kai-sei infected wasteland the government would have you believe is uninhabited…but do you believe that? The Wanderer—a half-man, half-kaiju hybrid—is just about the only being brave enough to travel across this strange world. But as of late, he’s not traveling alone. He’s discovered two children with the ability to control kaiju! In this issue, our traveling circus of freaks come across a 40-foot woman who’s in love with the King of the Monsters! Can our crew help this heartbroken giantess? |

So far, Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone has explored the more populated areas of the titular location. Even for mutated survivors, it’s incredibly difficult to penetrate the denser parts of the Deadzone, let alone survive them. Only Godzilla himself is able to learn all the secrets of the Deadzone from his towering perspective. However, now that the Wanderer, Runt, and Glasseater have passed their first challenge in Godzilla’s territory, they will get a first-row ticket to Godzilla’s personal matters, which might involve the modern-day adaptation of the classic B-horror Attack of the 50-Foot Woman.
The Deadzone is an inspired addition to Godzilla lore. What once used to be Seattle is now a piece of land almost completely taken over by nature, inhabited by the most terrifying of monsters and wild creatures, as well as survivors who can barely cope with their day-to-day struggles. In a way, the Deadzone is the Godzilla equivalent of Kong’s famous Skull Island, but located smack-dab in the middle of contemporary civilization.
