Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised the practice of governors abandoning projects started by their predecessors.
He described the act as a major cause of waste and inefficiency in governance across Nigeria.
Jonathan made the remarks on Wednesday while commissioning the Best Western Plus Hotel in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
He expressed disappointment that many of the projects he initiated during his tenure as Bayelsa State governor, before becoming Vice President in 2007, were neglected by successive administrations.
Recalling his time in office, Jonathan said his administration had supported efforts to promote tourism in the state, such as hosting the African Movie Awards, which attracted celebrities and filmmakers from across the world.
However, he noted that due to the lack of quality hotels in Bayelsa at the time, most international guests stayed in Port Harcourt.
He explained that the goal of such events was to boost the local economy by encouraging tourists to spend money within the state, but the absence of adequate infrastructure undermined that objective.
Jonathan stated that if his predecessors had completed those projects, Yenagoa would have become a major hub for investors and visitors.
