Google to grant schools access to Gemini AI while protecting privacy and data

Google’s Gemini AI is set to enter academia. The search giant will grant schools access to Gemini AI, and the company has promised it won’t pull students’ and academicians’ data to train the Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI)

Schools to gain access to Google Gemini AI with Workspace for Education accounts

Google is infusing Gemini AI in Google Workspace, which includes Google Docs, Gmail, and other productivity and collaboration platforms. The company is also plugging Gemini into other products such as Android, Google TV, and many more.

The Google Workspace suite offers Education accounts. Google has confirmed that it will allow schools access to Gemini AI via the Workspace for Education accounts.

Gemini for Google Workspace will reportedly be available starting May 23, 2024, which is a mere week away. Google is offering two tiers. The lower-cost Gemini Education has a monthly usage limit.

The second tier is called Education Premium. It offers complete access to Workspace AI tools. Additionally, this pricier plan also offers AI notes, and AI summaries for Google Meet as well as data loss prevention.

Google hasn’t indicated the pricing of these two plans yet. However, the company has stressed that it has put in additional data and privacy protection barriers.

Google has promised it won’t use data that’s generated while using Gemini for Education accounts, to train its AI. The company won’t share the data with third parties either. Google has further assured that it is offering these data privacy protections on Workspace for Education accounts for free.

Will Google grant schools access to the latest Gemini 1.5 Pro

Google has announced Gemini 1.5 Pro. The company claims it is the best model for general performance. Google assures Gemini 1.5 Pro has a two-million-token-long context window, which is supposed to be the longest of any large-scale LLM.

If that’s not enough, Google has also announced Gemini Flash, a Gen AI that’s optimized for snappier performance and quicker responses. Despite these advances, Google will offer the older Gemini 1.0 Pro to schools under the Gemini AI for Education accounts.

It is important to note that Google will grant access to Gemini AI to educators and students over the age of 18. In other words, the company seems to be prohibiting children and teens from using its Gen AI.
