Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has officially signed a bill to establish 29 new local government areas in the state.
With this move, Bauchi is now waiting for the National Assembly to give final approval before the new councils can operate fully.
The new LGAs are not active yet. They will only take effect after federal lawmakers complete the constitutional process.
This step is required because the 1999 Constitution still recognises only 20 LGAs for Bauchi State.
Governor Mohammed reportedly signed the bill on 28 October 2025, shortly after lawmakers in the Bauchi State House of Assembly passed it. A formal letter was then transmitted to Abuja for constitutional ratification.
The correspondence, signed by the Deputy Clerk of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Musa Yerima, was addressed to Senator Barau Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review. The letter, dated 29 October 2025, was titled “Forwarding of Bill.”
Yerima confirmed the move, stating:
“I am pleased to inform you that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed into Law, a bill to provide for the creation of 29 new additional local government areas in Bauchi State, 2025.”
He also explained that the new LGAs will remain pending until the National Assembly passes a law to “make consequential provisions” as required under Section 8(5) of the Constitution.
In the document, Yerima added that the Assembly acted in line with Section 100(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
For now, Bauchi still operates 20 constitutionally recognised LGAs. If the National Assembly approves this request, the state will officially have 49 local governments, one of the highest in the country.
