GOVERNOR Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has strongly condemned the alleged killing of 13 Ebonyi indigenes in Anambra State, describing the incident as a “barbaric and senseless act of violence.”
The victims were reportedly attacked during a routine monthly town union meeting in the Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, and obtained by newsmen, Governor Nwifuru called the incident shocking and a serious affront to peace and humanity.
“It defies reason and logic that a group of Ebonyi people peacefully gathered for a meeting would be shot at close range. This heinous act is unacceptable and must be condemned in its entirety,” the governor said.
He has since contacted Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, urging a prompt, transparent, and thorough investigation.
Nwifuru expressed confidence that the Anambra government and relevant security agencies would act swiftly to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.
Warning that failure to deliver justice could strain relations between the two states, the governor urged Ebonyi residents—especially affected families—to remain calm and avoid any retaliatory actions.
“Such barbarism has no place in our society. We will deploy all available resources to unmask and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he added.
Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all Ebonyi citizens, both within and outside the state.
He stressed that no individual would be shielded from accountability, assuring that he would personally follow the case to ensure justice is served.
“Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and the Ebonyi community in Ogboji. We trust that the Anambra State government and security agencies will act decisively to prevent such atrocities from happening again,” the statement concluded.
