Gov Otu Sacks Two Traditional Heads, Orders CMTRC To Investigate Allegations Against Them

The Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu has dismissed two traditional rulers from their positions.

This development was confirmed in a letter signed and made available by Governor Otu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gill Nsa.

However, the letter did not provide any reasons for this decision.

Naijaonpoint understands that Otu suspended His Highness Okkn Archinong Eke, the village head of Esuk Utan, along with the entire Esuk Utan village council, effective January 3, 2025.

The governor has also instructed the Calabar Municipal Traditional Rulers Council (CMTRC) to investigate the allegations made against the village head and the council.

The CMTRC has been tasked with submitting its findings within one week.

In the interim, the governor has directed the Obutong clan council to establish a five-member committee to oversee the affairs of the Esuk Utan community until the investigation concludes.

It is noteworthy that in April 2024, the governor had previously ordered the removal of His Royal Highness Etinyin Archibong Ita, the head of Akansoko in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, who had been acting following the passing of the former Paramount Ruler.

The monarch had expressed his objections, arguing that the governor was incorrect in appointing a Paramount Ruler for the region.

He maintained that the clan heads should convene to select one among themselves for the position.

He contended that this process did not occur, and the governor’s selection of an acting Paramount Ruler lacked fairness.

In a statement issued by Nsa, Otu subsequently appointed HRH Etinyin Francis Effiom Edem Efa, the Clan Head of Esuk Mba Clan in Akpabuyo Local Government Area.
