Govt files criminal charges against Prophetess Naomi, Oriyomi Hazmat, others

The Oyo State Government has filed an 18-count criminal charge against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Alhaji Oriyomi Hazmat, and the Principal of Islamic High School, Abdulahi Fasasi.
In December 2024, Naomi became entangled in legal issues following her charity work. She, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, owned by Oriyomi Hazmat, organized an event intended to feed the less privileged. Tragically, the event resulted in the death of over 32 children due to a stampede.
Both Naomi and Hazmat were arrested and remanded at the Agodi Correctional Facility by a Chief Magistrate. They were arraigned on four counts: conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities.
In a recent update, all three individuals were accused of additional offences, including conspiracy to commit murder, manslaughter, criminal negligence, and related charges. The charge sheet indicated that they failed to provide adequate security, crowd control measures, and medical facilities during the tragic funfair event held at the Islamic High School.
These offences are punishable under Sections 308 and 344 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol. 11, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Following the incident, the Ooni expressed his support for Naomi and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He praised her character and noted her dedication to organizing similar charitable events when she held her royal title.
