Graham Potter started his tenure at West Ham with a challenging match, as Aston Villa secured a comeback victory with a 2-1 win in the FA Cup third round on Friday, January 10.

Graham Potter was appointed as the Hammers’ new manager just a day prior, taking over from Julen Lopetegui, who was let go after a brief six-month period.

Despite failing to win in his first match back in management, there were some positive signs, particularly in West Ham’s attacking play during the first half.

The match began on a high note for West Ham, thanks to Lucas Paqueta’s early goal, set up by a clever pass from Crysencio Summerville.

Although an injury to Germany striker Niclas Fullkrug was an early concern, the team displayed attacking intent, with Paqueta consistently threatening Aston Villa’s defense.

However, the second half revealed areas for improvement, as Villa mounted a strong response. Amadou Onana equalized in the 71st minute after a corner, which West Ham contested vehemently, believing it should not have been awarded. Villa continued to apply pressure, with Morgan Rogers scoring the decisive goal in the 76th minute.

Despite the disappointment of exiting the FA Cup, Graham Potter expressed optimism about the game. “Overall, disappointed to go out, but lots of positives in the game,” he noted. He emphasized the need for improvement in dealing with opponents’ pressure, something he will prioritize as he seeks to strengthen his squad.

With only one training session before the match and key players like Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio absent, Potter faced a significant challenge in his return to coaching almost two years after losing his job at Chelsea in 2023.
