Gremlins 3 confirms its release date as a Harry Potter director hops aboard the sequel, which is currently in development at Warner Bros. Development of a possible Gremlins 3 has been ongoing since 2013, with news once in a while over the course of eight years. In January 2025, a report confirmed Warner Bros. are still working on the sequel.
Now, Variety reports that Gremlins 3 will be released in November 2027, with Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter movies, set to direct and produce the movie. The film’s release window was confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president David Zaslav during an investor call. Steven Spielberg will be returning as an executive producer.
Columbus previously wrote the original Gremlins back in 1984, while both the original and its 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, were produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. In 2017, Columbus was attached as the writer for the new installment. However, this latest news from Zaslav doesn’t specify if he wrote the script the sequel will be moving forward with.
No story details about the sequel were revealed during the investor call. However, Columbus previously stated his script from 2017 would analyze whether Gizmo should be killed, given he’s been the source of mogwai who’ve wrecked havoc as gremlins. Given Gremlins 3‘s delays in the past, however, it’s unclear if this will be the story the sequel follows.
Other previous details about the film include that it won’t use CGI for the mogwai and gremlins, instead opting for the practical effects that defined the first two movies. Although it’s unclear if this plan will change, the inclusion of both Columbus and Spielberg indicates the sequel will be trying to capture the feel of the original as faithfully as possible.
The sequel’s announcement comes as Warner Bros. has been beefing up their approach to franchise movies and shows in recent years. This includes development of The Goonies 2, their upcoming Harry Potter TV reboot, and the instant theatrical success of the DCU with Superman. Gremlins 3 seems like their next big push for franchise releases.
Now that November 2027 has been confirmed as the release window for Gremlins 3, more news about the sequel will likely crop up as its development goes into full swing. With Columbus heading the project, it’ll likely feel very similar to the original, with touches of modernization that weave into its nostalgic, horror comedy storyline.
