President Bola Tinubu reportedly met with Paul Kagame, the president of Rwanda, on Sunday in Paris, France.
A viral image of the meeting circulating online bears the watermark of Grok.
The picture was shared on Tinubu’s X account and also by Dada Olusegun, special assistant on new media to the president.
Grok is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by xAI, the company owned by Elon Musk, which is used for real-time searches, image generation, and other tasks.
Several Nigerians have criticised the presidential aide on Twitter, accusing him of sharing an AI-generated depiction of the meeting.
“Mr Dada Olusegun, why are you using Grok to generate a picture of what was supposed to have happened? Is it incompetence or are you trying to tell us something?” an X user asked.
According to reports, the original photograph from the lunch meeting was of low quality, which prompted the enhancement using Grok.
The AI tool reportedly improved the image to make it clearer before it was shared online.
President Tinubu left Lagos for Europe on December 28 for his end-of-year break.
The incident has sparked debate on social media over the use of AI in official communications and the ethics of sharing digitally enhanced images of public events.
