The Sokoto Heritage Reloaded Initiative (SOHRI) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to fulfill a national promise left unfulfilled by the previous administration, to immortalize Nigeria’s first executive president, the late Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari.
In an open letter addressed to the President, the group’s convener, Prof. Uthman Abdulqadir, applauded President Tinubu’s reputation for loyalty and commitment to national unity.
He cited Tinubu’s historic role in supporting former President Muhammadu Buhari during the fight for democratic restoration and the merger that birthed the All Progressives Congress (APC).
SOHRI expressed disappointment that despite public assurances, the Buhari administration failed to deliver on its promise to name a national monument after the late President Shagari. They now urge President Tinubu to right that wrong.
“President Shagari was not just a statesman; he was the embodiment of humility, integrity, and selfless service. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and it is only fitting that his memory is preserved through a national monument.”
According to the group, immortalizing Shagari would serve as a powerful testament to President Tinubu’s dedication to honoring Nigeria’s past heroes and preserving the country’s historical legacy.
“We appeal to you, Mr. President, to take this noble step and fulfill the promise that remains unmet. Naming a national monument in Shagari’s honor will be a mark of continuity and a gesture of national gratitude,” the letter read.
The group stressed that the appeal was made on behalf of countless Nigerians who believe in the importance of remembering leaders who laid the foundation for the country’s democratic journey.
“We believe your administration has the political will to take decisive steps in honoring Nigeria’s iconic leaders, starting with President Shagari,” Prof. Abdulqadir added.
The call has sparked renewed public interest, especially in Sokoto State, Shagari’s home base. Many citizens have taken to social media and community forums, urging the federal government to fulfill the long-standing promise and officially commemorate Shagari’s contributions to national development.
Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who served from 1979 to 1983, was overthrown in a military coup but left behind a legacy of public infrastructure, economic reforms, and commitment to education and national unity.
