Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has announced a 50% increase in its SMS transaction alert fee—from ₦4 to ₦6 per message—citing recent changes in telecom service rates.

The new fee structure will take effect from Thursday, May 1, 2025.

In a message sent to customers, the bank stated:

“Please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1, 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from ₦4 to ₦6 per message. This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers.”

While GTBank did not name the specific telecom operators involved or clarify the timing of the rate changes, it attributed the increase directly to higher charges from these service providers.

GTBank highlighted the critical role of SMS alerts in account security, helping customers stay informed about real-time activities on their accounts.

The bank added that customers have the option to opt out of the service if they choose.

“Kindly note that transaction alerts are important and help you keep track and stay in control of activities on your account.

“If you prefer not to receive transaction alerts via SMS, you can update your preferences by completing the transaction alert form on our website and sending it to [email protected],” the bank said.
