Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday, expressed concern over what he described as the Guinea-Bissau military’s forceful interference in the country’s post-election process, recalling scenes from its turbulent past.
Jonathan, who was in the West African country as part of an international election observation mission led by ECOWAS, said the sudden military power claim mirrored incidents he witnessed over a decade ago.
In a viral video released by SYMFONI TV, Jonathan narrated how the country had battled instability in 2010 and 2011, forcing regional leaders to step in repeatedly.
He warned that the current developments could push the nation back into its worst era if left unchecked.
Describing the severity of the country’s past political implosion, Jonathan said an episode during his official visit as Nigeria’s president remains one of the most brazen security breakdowns he had encountered.
According to him, on one of his trips, he landed to find a soldier inside the prime minister’s office attacking the nation’s number-two official.
He said, “It was so bad, the day I landed, a military man slapped the prime minister in the office. It was that bad. And what’s happening is like we’re going back to those dark days of Guinea-Bissau.”
