Unidentified gunmen have reportedly abducted an unknown number of worshippers who were engaged in night vigils at a secluded mountain location in Kogi State.

The incident took place on Friday in the Egbola area, along Agbaja Road within the Lokoja Local Government Area of the state.

As reported by Daily Trust, a woman named Mary Adams Gure was rescued by members of the state vigilante services.

A source revealed that the vigilante group became aware of the situation, mobilised to the scene, and confronted the gunmen in a gunfight.

The source indicated that the assailants arrived at the prayer gathering, firing shots indiscriminately to instil fear before forcibly taking the worshippers into the nearby bush.

The report noted that the rescued woman managed to escape amid the chaos.

“The vigilantes were mobilised quickly in response to the attack, and in the process, Gure was rescued. A search-and-rescue operation is ongoing to locate the remaining abducted faithful.

“Gure managed to escape and later found safety, thanks to the swift intervention of local vigilante members who were alerted and got to the scene of the incident on time,” the vigilante source stated.

Attempts to contact Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, for comments on the incident were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages.
