The Anambra State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the killing of four people by gunmen during a funeral ceremony at Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

Naijaonpoint learnt that the attackers stormed the burial on Thursday, opening fire on mourners and leaving four persons dead and at least 15 others injured.

The Command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident on Friday, noting that preliminary investigations suggest the attack was the result of a cult-related clash.

“Officers from Ogidi Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, responded swiftly to a distress call and restored order at the scene. Sixteen expended cartridges were recovered as exhibits,” Ikenga said.

He added that all injured victims were evacuated for treatment, while the Command had begun a discreet investigation to track and arrest the perpetrators.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has strongly condemned the incident and assures residents that the Command remains resolute in its commitment to rid the state of cult-related violence and other criminal activities. The Command urges members of the public to remain calm, security-conscious, and provide useful information to the nearest Police formation,” the statement read.

Naijaonpoint reports that Thursday’s killings come barely two months after 13 people were murdered by gunmen in Ogboji community, Orumba South LGA.

The Anambra State Government, through its Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, also denounced the violence, stressing that the incident was not targeted at any ethnic group.

“The government expects the police command to conduct a thorough investigation, identify the perpetrators of this heinous crime, and bring them to justice. The government assures the people of Ogboji and the entire state that we will do everything humanly possible to ensure justice is served,” Mefor stated.

The latest bloodshed in Ogidi has heightened tension in parts of Anambra, with residents urging security agencies to act decisively against cultism and unchecked gun violence that have become recurring in some communities.

As of press time, police said investigations were ongoing and updates would be communicated to the public.
