Gunmen have killed three policemen manning a checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, in the early hours of Wednesday.

Naijaonpoint reports that the incident occurred at the border town between Kogi and Kwara states, throwing the area into tension.

Spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the attack in a statement on Wednesday.

“I can confirm that three officers on duty were killed today in Egbe, a border community with Kwara State. The Commissioner of Police has deployed a tactical squad, and we are on the trail of the perpetrators,” Aya said.

He added that the tactical team had been tasked with restoring calm in the area and hunting down the attackers.

Community sources told Vanguard that the gunmen also made away with the rifles of the slain officers during the assault.

Naijaonpoint understands that the Kogi incident comes two days after a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), DSP Adama Adekunle Emmanuel, was allegedly shot dead by a colleague under unclear circumstances in the Life Camp area of Abuja.

The incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, August 31, at a hotel where the late officer was reportedly on assignment.

According to Daily Trust, the widow of the deceased, Titilayo Adams, alleged foul play, insisting that the injuries on her husband’s body did not suggest an accident.
