Habemus Papam! Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Elected as New Pope, Taking the Name Leo XIV

The announcement was made from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica by French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti with the traditional Latin declaration, “Habemus Papam!” (“We have a Pope!”). White smoke had earlier billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling that the 133 cardinal electors had reached a two thirds majority on the second day and fourth ballot of the conclave.

Appearing on the balcony to greet the cheering crowds in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV offered a message of peace. In his first words, he said, “Peace be with you,” and spoke of a desire for dialogue “without fear.” He addressed the faithful in Italian and Spanish, acknowledging his many years as a missionary in Peru.

Born on September 14, 1955, Robert Francis Prevost is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.). His extensive career includes decades of missionary service in Peru, where he also became a citizen. He served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023. Prior to his election as Pope, he was appointed by Pope Francis in January 2023 as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a powerful Vatican office responsible for vetting bishop nominations worldwide. He was elevated to the rank of cardinal in September 2023.

His background as a missionary and his recent role in a key Vatican department are seen by many as indicators of a pontificate that could blend pastoral experience with a deep understanding of the Church’s global governance. Reports suggest he is close to his predecessor Pope Francis’s vision regarding environmental issues, outreach to the poor and migrants.

The election of the first American Pope has been met with anticipation and discussion globally. As head of the Augustinian religious order and later the Dicastery for Bishops, Cardinal Prevost was considered a prominent figure, though his U.S. nationality was historically seen as a potential barrier to the papacy due to the existing geopolitical influence of the United States.
