Reports surfaced in Germany on Wednesday that Nigerian forward Victor Boniface has been summoned by Werder Bremen’s hierarchy after a string of unusual social media posts drew criticism, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old striker, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, arrived in the summer to lead Bremen’s attack but there were suggestions some of his online behaviour had unsettled the club.

Bild reported that Boniface must now meet club bosses to explain himself after sharing cryptic and, in some eyes, disrespectful comments.

One post in particular caught widespread attention.

On Instagram, Boniface wrote:

“If you waste your money on too many women, you will not achieve anything in life. Find yourself one or two women and settle down. At most three women, or if you are going through a lot, four is also okay.”

While fans in Nigeria treated the message as characteristic of the forward’s humour, the remark reportedly jarred with fans of his new club.

BILD revealed that Bremen found the meaning “unclear” and want the matter resolved internally.

... also caught the eye of global superstar Drake, who replied with a laughing emoji on Instagram.

Boniface cheekily responded, “Bro, dm for more advice,” before later sharing a branded OVO bag from the rapper, a twist that only amplified the storm around him.

No Bremen trouble for Victor Boniface

However, German outlet Deichstube has confirmed on Thursday that Werder Bremen has no immediate concerns regarding Boniface’s social media activities.

Werder Bremen, when asked, revealed that there is no meeting scheduled with the Bayer Leverkusen loanee to explain his actions online.

Bremen would prefer that Boniface do much of his talking on the the pitch, as the Super Eagles star’s start at the club has been mixed.

The former Union SG forward assisted in the 4-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on his debut but was criticised by head coach Horst Steffen in the 3-0 defeat to Freiburg.

“He was too much everywhere. It should be the case that he stays more in the centre. It was not as I wanted,” Steffen said.

Despite that, Steffen praised his intensity in training and hinted that his role will grow as he adapts.

Managing director Clemens Fritz also stressed that Boniface remains an important signing, insisting the club is committed to helping him find consistency.

Boniface, who chose the No. 44 shirt at Bremen after his preferred 22 was taken, is expected to feature again on Friday night against Bayern Munich.
