Super Eagles star Toluwalase Arokodare has handed credit to Racing Genk’s head coach Thorsten Fink for making him a “much better” player ahead of his 100th appearance for the Belgian Pro League side, Footynaija.com reports.

Arokodare joined the Pro League title hopefuls from French Ligue 1 side Amiens SC in January 2023, and after initially struggling to find his feet in Belgium, the 24-year-old is finally producing the goods.

He has bagged an impressive tally of 20 goals and provided five assists in 36 games across all competitions for Genk so far this season.

During the last summer window, Arokodare, who is set to play his 100th match on Sunday, could have explored opportunities to play elsewhere following the arrival of Fink. However, he stayed put and is now reaping the benefits of learning under the German manager.

“Who would have thought? When I signed here, I had hoped to reach 100,” the Nigerian forward said in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws.

“It wasn’t always easy, either. There was an opportunity for departure this season, but I am very happy that I stayed and can play under this coach. He has made me much better.”

Reminded about the fact that he almost signed for Sunday’s opponents Anderlecht from Amiens instead of Genk, the Nigeria international was quick to return the focus to the present, insisting that he is ready for war.

“We don’t focus on the past, but on our football. It is a big match for both clubs. It is the playoffs. These are the games you want to play,” the towering striker said.

“We are a resilient team, you saw that last week against Gent. We want to beat Anderlecht with the same mentality as the whole season.

“There is certainly no underestimation. We don’t underestimate or overestimate anyone. We start from our own strength and pretend it is war.”
