Late former President Muhammadu Buhari stood for democracy, freedom and justice, the President of the Republic of The Gambia, Adama Barrow.
Barrow made the assertion while paying a visit to the family of the late Buhari in Duara, Katsina State on Friday.
He was received in Daura by the Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Abdullahi Garba-Faskari, alongside Buhari’s family members.
Speaking during his visit, the Gambian president said the late Buhari stood as a pillar of democracy in Africa.
He also described the late former president as an ardent supporter of The Gambia.
“President Buhari stood by us and the Gambian people to ensure that our democratic mandate was fully respected and implemented to its ultimate end,” he said.
“Every time I saw Buhari, I saw a father, a brother, and an uncle standing before me,” Barrow said.
He also said that the late Buhari was known for his committment towards promoting peace and democracy across the West African region and globally.
He stated, “I feel deeply obliged for what President Buhari has done — not just for The Gambia, but for ECOWAS, the African Union, and Nigeria’s image across the world.
“He stood for democracy, freedom, and justice,” he noted.
Commiserating with the Buhari family, Barrow also extended his condolences to the people of Nigeria.
He said that the legacy left behind by the late former president would never be forgotten.
