A suspected fake lawyer, Godwin Eguabor, was arrested while representing a client at a magistrate court in Badagry, Lagos State, on Wednesday.

Eguabor reportedly appeared before the court, claiming to be legal counsel, prompting suspicions from Atule Elchors, the vice-chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Badagry branch.

Elchors, who had been investigating rumors of a fake lawyer operating in the area, confronted Eguabor during the hearing. “We asked for his Supreme Court number, which is mandatory for all lawyers, but he couldn’t provide it and kept giving inconsistent responses,” Elchors said.

Adding to the suspicion, it was revealed that the name Eguabor used in court differed from the one he provided to the police after his arrest.

On Thursday, Eguabor was formally charged with impersonation under Section 380 of the Lagos State Criminal Code, 2015.

During the hearing, the prosecutor, Edet Ekpo, outlined the charges against him. Magistrate L.A. Layeni granted Eguabor bail in the sum of ₦1 million, requiring two sureties.

One of the sureties must be a managing director of a company, provide a one-year bank statement, and deposit ₦25,000 to the Ikeja High Court Registrar’s account.

The case has been adjourned to February 19 for further hearing.
