‘His presence was larger than life,’ Sanwo-Olu eulogises late Wigwe

“A year ago, our world changed forever. In an instant, we lost a man whose presence was larger than life,” the governor stated.

Sanwo-Olu joined other distinguished guests at Eko Hotel in Lagos for the one-year remembrance of the esteemed banking leader.

Wigwe, along with his wife Chizoba and son Chizi, tragically lost their lives in an air crash in the United States exactly one year ago.

“The pain of their loss remains as fresh as ever, an unhealed wound,” Sanwo-Olu expressed.

Reflecting on Wigwe’s impact on Nigeria’s development, particularly in Lagos State, the governor admitted he still finds it difficult to refer to him in the past tense.

“He had unwavering faith in Nigeria and Africa,” Sanwo-Olu said. “He especially believed in what we were doing in Lagos. Herbert accompanied us on global engagements, helping to attract partners and secure funding.”

The governor acknowledged that Lagos State has deeply felt Wigwe’s absence over the past year.

“There are projects that would have progressed much faster if Herbert were still here. His drive and passion propelled things forward,” he noted.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted Wigwe’s contributions, from his role in the banking sector to his support during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his dedication to arts and culture.

“H.O.W made my work as governor a little easier,” Sanwo-Olu shared.

“He was always seeking ways to make a meaningful impact. Nothing brought him more joy than bringing projects to life,” the governor said, adding that Wigwe’s greatest legacy lives on in his children—Tochi, David, Hanna, and Okachi.
