Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has broken its silence on the death of the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, announcing the commencement of an internal investigation into the incident.
The hospital’s reaction followed public allegations by Adichie that medical negligence at the Lagos-based facility led to the death of her son, Nkanu Nnamdi, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
In an earlier statement, Adichie accused Euracare of failing to properly monitor her son after he was sedated with propofol for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line.
According to her, the lack of monitoring allegedly resulted in severe complications, including loss of responsiveness, seizures and eventual cardiac arrest.
In a statement signed by its management, Euracare expressed sympathy to the grieving family and described the loss as devastating.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Adichie and family on the demise of their son and acknowledge the profound and unimaginable loss they are experiencing during this deeply distressing time.
“The loss of a child is beyond words, and we offer our most heartfelt condolences to his parents and the entire family,” the hospital said.
The hospital said it was compelled to address the matter following widespread public discussions, noting that not all reports circulating were accurate.
“We find it necessary, for the record, to clarify that some of the reports currently being circulated contain inaccuracies,” Euracare stated.
Euracare explained that the child was already in critical condition before being brought to its facility and had been treated at two paediatric centres prior to referral.
“The patient, who was critically ill, was referred to our facility for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment for a period of time at two paediatric centres,” the statement read.
It added that upon arrival, its medical team provided care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards, including sedation where clinically required.
The hospital disclosed that it had commenced a detailed internal review of the case, stressing its commitment to transparency and due process.
“We have commenced a detailed investigation consistent with our clinical governance standards and best practices. We remain committed to engaging transparently and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes,” it said.
Euracare also noted that it worked with external medical teams recommended by the family and provided all necessary clinical support, but the child died less than 24 hours after arriving at the hospital.
The hospital said the incident had deeply affected its staff and reiterated its commitment to compassion, patient safety and respect for the family’s privacy.
“As medical professionals, we carry the weight of this loss deeply. Our priority remains compassion, patient safety, and the responsible handling of this matter, while respecting the family’s privacy and allowing due process to take its course,” the statement added.
The hospital said it would continue to hold the family in its thoughts and prayers as investigations continue.
