The Delta State Police Command has begun a full homicide investigation into the gruesome murder of retired High Court Judge, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, whose bound body was discovered in her Asaba residence on November 24, 2025.
According to police authorities, the incident came to light after the deceased’s brother visited her home and found her lifeless body in the sitting room.
Her hands, legs and mouth were reportedly tied. On receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer, ‘A’ Division, Asaba, led officers to the residence where the corpse was removed and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.
Police confirmed the arrest of one suspect, Lucky Matthew, while the principal suspect, Godwin Vanem, fled the scene and is currently on the run.
Preliminary investigations, according to police sources, suggest that Vanem “is suspected to have committed the dastardly act and fled the apartment,” prompting an intensive manhunt.
Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, the matter has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (Homicide Section) for what the command describes as a “discreet and thorough investigation.”
CP Condoles with Family, Assures Justice
In a statement issued on Sunday, November 30, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, said the Commissioner of Police commiserated with the family of the late jurist and promised that the command would ensure justice is served.
“The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, on behalf of the command, condoles with the family of the deceased and assures them of justice,” the statement read.
