While still a couple of years away before a return to Berk, Mason Thames is already excitedly gearing up for How to Train Your Dragon 2. Thames became the new leading face of the fantasy adventure series with the 2025 live-action remake, starring as the awkward protagonist Hiccup as he discovers and befriends Toothless, a rare breed of dragon known as the Night Fury. Their friendship invokes a major change in Hiccup’s Viking village, as they no longer look at the mythical creatures with distrust.

Written and directed by original trilogy helmer Dean DeBlois, the first How to Train Your Dragon was a strong success, grossing over $635 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing installment in the franchise and securing a 77% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. While debuting it at CinemaCon in April 2025, Universal also confirmed How to Train Your Dragon 2 was moving forward with a June 2027 release date set.

In a recent interview with Joe Deckelmeier for ScreenRant for Regretting You, Thames was asked what he could share about How to Train Your Dragon 2. Chuckling as he was quick to denote he could get in trouble for sharing too much, the star did tease that he’s already seen some of the “really cool” concepts planned for the live-action sequel and is thrilled to help adapt his “favorite out of the trilogy“. What can I say without getting in trouble? I think nothing. Nothing. I’m super excited, and the second movie is personally my favorite out of the trilogy. I’ve had some talks, and we have a lot of cool people coming in, and the concepts that I’ve seen are really cool. And I’m excited!

Based on Thames’ comments, it seems as though How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s production is still a ways away from kicking off, which makes sense when looking at the first film. After a delay from the SAG-AFTRA strikes, the first remake began shooting a year and a half prior to its release, and took four months to complete, with the rest of the time dedicated to ...-production of the movie’s large-scale CGI.

Since the sequel isn’t set to hit theaters until June 11, 2027, it seems possible that the studio and movie team are aiming for the same production window and turnaround. Thames, in particular, has been quite busy over the past year, also returning for The Black Phone 2, the Green Day-centric New Year’s Rev and the aforementioned Colleen Hoover adaptation Regretting You. He also signed on to join Macon Blair’s next dark comedy, leading with Dave Franco.

Regardless of when it starts shooting, Thames’ excitement points to another exciting adventure on the way in How to Train Your Dragon 2. His tease of “a lot of cool people coming in“, in particular, could point to his being aware of the casting going on for the sequel, which will introduce Hiccup’s long-lost mother, played by Cate Blanchett in the original, and dragon trappers Drago and Eret, previously voiced by Djimon Hounsou and Kit Harington. With the first live-action remake mixing new and returning actors, it will be interesting to see if any others come back for the next installment.
