“I am open to play for Nigeria” – German-born player expresses desire to play for the Super Eagles

Nigeria’s hopes of boosting their defensive line have received a major boost, as German-born left-back Felix Agu has publicly declared his desire to play for the Super Eagles, Footynaija.com reports.

Agu, who currently plays for Bundesliga club Werder Bremen, expressed his deep connection to Nigeria, stating that representing his father’s country would be an emotional moment.

In an interview with Germany-based journalist Oma Akatugba, as reported by Score Nigeria, the 25-year-old defender said:

“It would be a dream come true to see my father smile by representing my roots.”

Agu who previously featured for Germany’s U21 team in 2019, now awaits the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to begin the formal process of switching his international allegiance.

The German-born left-back of Nigerian descent has not yet played for the German senior national team. This makes him eligible to represent Nigeria once the application is approved.

He is currently enjoying a solid season with Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, and his versatility and defensive qualities have caught the eye of Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle.

Chelle has been actively working to convince Nigerian-eligible players in Europe to join the Super Eagles, especially as the team looks to strengthen ahead of the remaining 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“I am open to play for Nigeria,” Agu confirmed.

“It will be a dream to play for the Super Eagles.”

With Nigeria struggling in the World Cup qualifying campaign, having recorded just one win in six matches, Agu’s arrival could help shore up the defence, especially after lapses that saw the Super Eagles drop points against Zimbabwe and South Africa.

It now looks to be seen if the NFF will expedite Agu’s switch in hopes of including him in the squad for upcoming fixtures.
