Nnamdi Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has confirmed that he remains in custody at the Kuje Prison, a day after his arrest during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.
In a post on his 𝕏 handle on Tuesday, Ejimakor assured supporters of his safety but expressed concern over the handling of his case.
“I am safe and sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The Magistrate refused to listen to our submissions. He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way,” he wrote.
The human rights lawyer further alleged that the authorities deliberately chose a particular court in Kuje to arraign him instead of other magistrates courts within Abuja.
“For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje,” Ejimakor stated.
Naijaonpoint reports that Ejimakor was among those arrested on Monday during the protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore, which demanded the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
Presidency Seeks Sanction Against Ejimakor
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has called on legal regulatory bodies to sanction Ejimakor for participating in the protest.
Onanuga argued that Ejimakor’s action was inconsistent with professional ethics.
“I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, among the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore. I wonder what Mr Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest,” he said.
According to him, the lawyer should have been mindful of the principle of sub judice, given that Kanu’s treason trial is still ongoing.
“The prosecution has concluded its case. It is now the duty of Kanu’s legal team to focus on presenting a strong defence rather than engaging in public demonstrations,” Onanuga added.
Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, younger brother to the IPOB leader, were arrested alongside others after protesters defied a court order restricting demonstrations around key government facilities in Abuja. They were arraigned at the Kuje Magistrate Court and remanded till Friday.
