Popular Nigerian Juju musician, Oluwashina Akanbi Peters popularly known as Sir Shina Peters has shared details about his early life.

Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, the 67-year-old musician recounted how quickly his life changed as a young teen.

He said he began performing at age 10, bought his first car at 13, became a father at 14, and completed his first house by 16.

“I started my career at the age of 10. I had my first child at 14. I bought my first car at 13. I built my first house at 16,” he said.

Despite his past successes, Sir Shina Peters indicated he has no plans to return fully to music.

He explained that the current music environment does not suit his creative style, and he struggles to find inspiration for new songs.

He also said that a large portion of his audience now comes from outside his Yoruba community, with many fans asking for new music.

However, he feels that the conditions today make it difficult for him to engage in active music-making.

He said: “65 per cent of my fans are Igbos, not Yorubas. My fans are demanding that I give them new music but I don’t just go to the studio. I can’t go to the studio, the atmosphere is not conducive for me. I don’t know what to sing.”

Naijaonpoint reports that Shina Peters, born in 1958 in Lagos, Nigeria, is widely recognized for pioneering the Afrojuju music style, a blend of traditional juju music with Afrobeat and funk influences.

He rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s with hit albums like Ace and Shina Peters Live, earning him a lasting place in Nigeria’s music history.
