Popular Oyo State-based broadcaster and Agidigbo FM founder, Oriyomi Hamzat, popularly called Oriyomi, has stated that it was God who approved his decision to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.
Naijaonpoint reports that Oriyomi formally declared his intention to contest the election on the platform of the Accord Party on Saturday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium (Liberty Stadium) in Ibadan, where he openly stated that he would no longer campaign or mobilise support for any other political aspirant ahead of the 2027 polls.
Hamzat said his decision followed deep reflection, consultations with trusted advisers and prayers, stressing that he could not ignore what he believes is God’s directive.
Speaking during one of his programmes on Agidigbo FM on Monday, Hamzat thanked supporters and advisers who attended his declaration rally at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, on Saturday.
The broadcaster, widely known for his signature Yoruba expression, “e gbenu si mic” (speak to the microphone), said he carefully considered the views of those who encouraged him to contest and those who advised against it.
“The people of Oyo, my lovers, especially my advisers who warned me against contesting, I thank you all,” he said.
“I sampled the advice of people who encouraged me to contest and those who warned me against it. I tabled it to God, and He approved my contesting.”
He added that disobeying divine instruction for the sake of public opinion was not an option for him.
“And I don’t want to disobey God because I want to please most of you who warned me against contesting. I believe you all love me; that’s why you are advising me,” Hamzat stated.
Hamzat appealed to those who may feel offended by his decision, asking for forgiveness and support as he begins his political journey.
“If there’s anyone I have offended with this decision, I implore them to forgive and support me now that I have declared my interest in the apex seat of the state,” he said.
He also pledged to run a people-oriented administration if elected, distancing himself from what he described as corrupt political practices.
“I want to serve the people and not be like most of those corrupt politicians. I believe that I will win because the people are for me, and I didn’t buy anyone to be at the event,” he added.
The broadcaster dismissed claims by critics who insist he would not succeed at the polls, saying he had moved beyond fear of electoral defeat or manipulation.
“We have moved on from the point of whether I would be rigged out or lose the election. I am seeking all your support,” he declared.
Hamzat officially declared his governorship ambition on Saturday during a rally at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, where thousands of supporters gathered.
At the event, he described his decision to join partisan politics as a response to a “divine calling,” noting that he never intended to seek elective office.
According to him, his previous involvement in politics was limited to supporting candidates and causes he believed in.
“Today, I am publicly declaring my intention to join Accord as my political platform and to contest the Oyo governorship election in 2027 as a candidate,” he announced.
Hamzat further stated that his ambition is not driven by financial strength, political godfathers or government support.
“I don’t have money or political connections, and I don’t have the backing of the government of the day. I have come with God, and that is all I need,” the popular Kokoro Alate programme host said.
