FORMER Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa has retired from international football.
The 33-year-old Kano Pillars forward announced today that he has called time on his Super Eagles career after close to 15 years of national service.
“Dear Nigerians, dear Super Eagles family, after a lot of thought I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” Musa wrote in a statement posted on social media.
The former CSKA Moscow, Leicester City and Al Nassr forward made his Super Eagles debut in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar in September 2010 and his last game for the three-time African champions was in the Unity Cup against Ghana in May this year.
Musa has more senior appearances for Nigeria than any other player in history with 111 (18 goals) and has scored the most World Cup goals for the Super Eagles (four).
“I wore this badge with pride for 15 years.
From a 17-year-old boy answering every call Nigeria to becoming the most-capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances,” Musa added.
“AFCON champion. Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer. Captain. Servant. Believer.
“I gave everything. Thank you Nigeria… my heart will always beat green. Once an Eagles, always an Eagle.”
The highlight of Musa’s international career was winning the AFCON title with the Super Eagles in 2013, the team’s last triumph in the tournament.
He is currently the General Manager of his boyhood club Kano Pillars, and is still registered to play for the Nigeria Premier Football League side.
