Victor Osimhen has admitted that Galatasaray had every reason to be proud after holding Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw in their UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigeria international revealed his admiration for Atletico manager Diego Simeone while describing the Spanish giants as one of the best teams in the world.
Atletico arrived in Istanbul as clear favourites, despite the intimidating atmosphere at Galatasaray’s RAMS Park, and they wasted no time in showing their intent.
Just four minutes into the contest, Giuliano Simeone, son of Atletico boss Diego, powered a header home from six yards to give the visitors the perfect start.
The early setback did little to dent Galatasaray’s belief. Fresh from helping Nigeria claim a bronze medal at AFCON 2025 in Morocco, Osimhen led the line with energy and aggression, constantly unsettling Atletico’s defence and helping his side grow into the game.
Their pressure was rewarded 16 minutes after falling behind, albeit in fortunate fashion, as Marcos Llorente turned the ball into his own net while trying to deal with a dangerous delivery. The equaliser settled the contest and both teams had to be content with a point as the game wore on, a result that moves each side closer to qualification for the knockout phase.

Victor Osimhen hails Simeone and eyes qualification push
After the final whistle, Osimhen was quick to single out Atletico boss Diego Simeone for special praise.
The Argentine has been in charge since December 2011, making him one of the longest-serving managers in Europe. Simeone has built a side known for its discipline, intensity and clear identity, winning two La Liga titles, two Europa Leagues and reaching two Champions League finals.
Victor Osimhen told Movistar+ as per Forzacimbom: “I love Diego Simeone, I’ve always been a fan of him.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet him a few times. They play aggressively and have a clear identity. Since the coach has been there for many years, the players are completely accustomed to the kind of game he wants.
“That’s why I’m putting so much emphasis on the performance we put out. Because Atlético Madrid is one of the best teams in the world, and even getting a draw against them shows that you’re on the right track.”
The result leaves Atletico on 13 points from seven games. They can secure a place in the last 16 if they beat Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt at home next Wednesday, after the Norwegians shocked Manchester City 3-1.
Galatasaray, meanwhile, sit on 10 points and must travel to the Etihad Stadium to face City in their final league-phase match. A win would guarantee a place in the two-legged play-offs, while even a draw could yet be enough depending on other results.
