FORMER spokesperson for the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign, Kenneth Okonkwo, has denied allegations of betrayal against Peter Obi, the party’s flagbearer in the last election,
Speaking in an interview today, the actor-turned-politician said he remained fully loyal to Obi throughout his time with the campaign, and at no point did he consult with or align with rival political camps.
“When I worked for him, I never consulted any politician. I never talked to any political party. I was 100% loyal,” Okonkwo stated.
He emphasized that his public departure from the Labour Party in 2024 was done transparently and with integrity. Okonkwo cited persistent internal crises within the party and Obi’s failure to address them as the reasons for his resignation.
“They don’t understand what betrayal means. Anybody saying or writing anything negative about me is reflecting their own character, not mine,” he said.
Okonkwo, now affiliated with a political coalition aiming to unseat the APC in the 2027 general elections, challenged Obi to specify how he had been betrayed.
He also rejected insinuations that he benefitted materially from his role in Obi’s campaign, stating: “How can you betray someone you’re no longer working with? I never collected money or a house from him.”
Okonkwo responded to Obi’s earlier veiled comments likening betrayal to that of Jesus by one of his disciples, saying, “If he’s calling himself Jesus in that analogy, then I have no fight with that. But I know I didn’t betray anyone.”
His remarks come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
