Identity Revealed As DIA Arrests Police Officer Over Alleged Coup Plot

A personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has been named among those arrested and detained by military authorities over an alleged plot to overthrow Nigeria’s democratic government.

The police officer, identified as Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim from Taraba State, was reportedly arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and is currently being held in the agency’s custody.

According to SaharaReporters, the arrest followed information allegedly extracted from some of the detained military officers during ongoing investigations.

A military source was quoted as saying that the detained suspects include officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as one police officer.

“Yes, among those in DIA’s custody is a policeman,” the source said.

“The military officers under detention are 35—drawn from the Army, Navy and Air Force—and one policeman identified as Ahmed Ibrahim, making a total of 36 security operatives.”

The source added that the police officer was arrested after investigations allegedly linked him to the failed attempt.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Nigeria Police Force were unsuccessful.

Calls by Sahara Reporters to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, were not answered, while a WhatsApp message sent to him had not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.

In October 2025, several military officers were arrested in Abuja over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.

The Defence Intelligence Agency, Nigeria’s primary military intelligence body established in 1986, is handling the investigation under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lt.-Gen. Emmanuel Parker Undiandeye.

At the time, military authorities publicly described the arrests as relating to acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, dismissing reports of a coup plot.

However, the narrative shifted on Monday, January 26, 2026, when the Defence Headquarters acknowledged that allegations of plotting to overthrow the government were among the findings against some of the detained officers following the conclusion of investigations.
