Former Super Eagles goalkeeper coach, Alloy Agu, has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs, Soccernet.ng exclusively reports.
Agu, who formerly donned the colours of MVV Maastricht, praised the team’s performance in their last two qualifying matches against Lesotho and the Benin Republic.
Nigeria secured crucial victories—a 2-1 win over Lesotho in South Africa and a commanding 4-0 triumph over Benin in Uyo—to clinch a place in the African play-offs as one of the best runners-up.

Agu: Former Kayserispor Star On Super Eagles
Speaking to Soccernet.ng, Agu commended the team’s recent turnaround under coach Eric Chelle and described their performances as a glimpse of the quality Nigerians have long expected from the Super Eagles.
“Yes, even in the last two games, they showed the calibre of what everyone believes they can do,” Agu told Soccernet.ng. “With what they showed everyone in the last two games, there is hope for Nigerians that the Super Eagles are going to do us proud. If they continue with this trend, I think there is hope.”

The former Kayserispor shot-stopper urged the players to maintain focus as they head into the decisive World Cup play-offs in November, where they are expected to face Gabon in the semi-final.
Nigeria, currently ranked 41st in the world by FIFA, are the highest-seeded team among the African play-off contenders.
