Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu is relishing his first senior call-up to the Nigerian national team as he prepares for a crucial doubleheader in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Footynaija.com reports.

Six years after representing the Flying Eagles at the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup, the 24-year-old has been rewarded with a place in Eric Chelle’s squad following a string of impressive performances in the Czech top flight.

Ogbu has been a key figure for Slavia Prague this season, scoring twice in 20 league games while also featuring in the Champions League qualifiers and Europa League. His form has not gone unnoticed, with Nigeria’s new boss handing him the opportunity to stake a claim in the Super Eagles’ defensive setup.

Speaking to Nigerian reporters in Kigali, Ogbu shared his admiration for Chelle’s coaching methods.

He is a tough gaffer, he pushes us to be good players, and that’s what I love,” said the former Lillestrøm centre-back.

When asked about his own strengths, Ogbu confidently highlighted what sets him apart.

My three best qualities? I am strong, intelligent, and capable of playing good football.”

Nigeria’s qualification campaign has been underwhelming, with the team struggling to assert dominance in their opening four matches. However, Ogbu remains determined to contribute and make his presence count.

“It feels great. I am happy to be part of the national team. For me, it’s a great thing. Everybody wants to play for his country, and I am really happy to be part of this team.

“The moment they called me to the national team, you know it’s not a place for holiday, so we are coming here to fight for Nigerians and to play good football.

When you have the opportunity and the time to play, you have to do what is right for the country and for yourself as well.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Ogbu faces stiff competition for a starting spot, with William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey currently ahead of him in the pecking order.
