Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday arrived in Kebbi State in the wake of the abduction of students from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga.
According to reports by Channels Television, the police chief is expected to hold a closed-door meeting with Governor Nasir Idris before addressing officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force deployed in the state.
Egbetokun’s visit comes barely 48 hours after he joined Service Chiefs for a high-level security briefing with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the rising wave of kidnappings across Kebbi, Niger and Kwara states dominated discussions.
Also present at the meeting were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyode; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kelvin Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye; Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Ajayi.
The session was convened following back-to-back mass abductions that have triggered nationwide outrage.
Gunmen had stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, on November 17, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, who attempted to shield students during the attack.
The bandits whisked away several students and operated for an extended period without resistance.
Barely days after the Kebbi incident, another mass abduction occurred on Friday at St. Mary’s Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, in Niger State.
The school’s gatekeeper was shot and left critically injured before the attackers seized 315 students, according to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). CAN confirmed that 50 of the abducted pupils later escaped.
