OpenAI is one of the most popular AI companies in the world right now, and that’s due in no small part to its board of talented and intellectual leaders. However, leadership changes over time, and OpenAI is going through a leadership change at the moment. The company’s co-founder and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, has announced that he is leaving OpenAI.

If his name sounds familiar, he was one of the main people who were involved in the coup that saw CEO Sam Altman ousted back in November 2023. At this point, we are still in the dark about what exactly led to that drama. However, Sutskever pretty much spearheaded the whole ordeal. We may never know what happened, but it all seems like water under the bridge now.

Ilya Sutskever is leaving OpenAI

This news comes with many sad goodbyes and sentimental posts on Twitter. Both Ilya Sutskever and Sam Altman made extended posts about his leaving, and they are tear-jerkers. “I will miss everyone dearly. So long, and thanks for everything.”, Sutskever said in his post. Sam Altman stated, “This is very sad to me; Ilya is easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field, and a dear friend.”

So, what’s next?

As for Sutskever, he’s moving on to “a project that is very personally meaningful” to him. We have no idea what this project is, but we will hopefully find out about it in the future. Best of luck to him and his endeavors!

As for OpenAI, the company needs a new Chief scientist. The company will be getting a new Chief scientist in the form of Jakub Pachocki, the company’s director of research. OpenAI states that Pachocki has been “spearheading the development of GPT-4 and OpenAI Five, and fundamental research in large-scale RL and deep learning optimization.”

So, this is the end of a chapter in OpenAI’s book, but the start of a new one. We’ll have to see where the company goes from here.
