‘I’m not perfect’ – Ex-Speaker Dogara on accepting to be Tinubu’s running mate in 2027

Yakubu Dogara

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has reacted to speculations about accepting to become President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 general election.

Dogara stated that leadership and nation-building have never depended on perfect individuals, citing historical examples of how civilizations were built and sustained by ordinary people.

He said he’s not perfect despite his political experience but can boast of having some rich pedigree.

The former Speaker made the remarks on Sunday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, where he was asked about the possibility of serving as vice-presidential candidate.

According to him, all his achievements are by the grace of God, adding that he remains conscious of his imperfections.

Dogara pointed to his experience as former Speaker of the House of Representatives, where he once ranked as the fourth-highest public officer in the country, saying it exposed him to important aspects of governance.

He noted that the position gave him access to knowledge and responsibilities that many people may not have encountered.

Dogara said: “Well, honestly speaking, I don’t know why I’m being asked these questions, but let me say something, I don’t think I’m ever prepared for anything. Honestly, what I’m prepared for is that I know that everything I am is by the grace of God.

“I will look at myself as totally unprepared, though I have some rich pedigree. I’ve served as the Speaker of the House of Representative, having been number four person in this country of about 200 million, there are certain things I know that a lot of people don’t know.

“I can assure you that, but all I know is that I’m not perfect.”
