The Nigerian Army Directorate of Islamic Affairs says trained imams are critical to instilling discipline and combating substance abuse in the army.
Brig.- Gen. Usman Musa, the Directorate’s Commander, stated this at its annual training week/conference “Yobe 2025” in Damaturu on Monday.
The conference had a theme, “ Soldier first concept : The Role of Nigerian Army Imams in inculcating discipline, courage and producing soldiers free from drug and substance abuse for a combat ready force in line with COAS philosophy.”
He said the theme fits into the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) command philosophy of effectively discharging the army’s constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.
Musa noted that the conference would assist the directorate in playing its role of spiritual leadership, admonition and imparting authentic Islamic teachings on the spiritual dimension of being a soldier.
“The Directorate has been up and doing in this effort in line with world-based practices to help a well-informed, highly intellectual and decent imam for the Nigerian Army.
“And stressing the need for soldiers to defend his nation, the people, their properties, their dignity and honour at all times.
“This will in no small measure bring out the best out of our troops in all theatre of operations within and outside the country,” the commander said.
He commended the soldier-based concept of the COAS which was pivotal in reorganising the role of soldiers as the basis of the army ‘s strength, effectiveness and mission success.
“ Sir, your inspiring leadership is indeed a beacon of hope for the Nigerian Army and the nation at large.”
In his remarks, Alhaji Idi Gubana, the Deputy Governor of Yobe, noted that substance abuse was a matter of concern among troops and the society.
He said that prolonged and agonising war against insurgency had exposed troops to drug abuse to overcome their traumatic experiences.
The deputy governor, however, called on the directorate to liaise with relevant agencies in its efforts at tackling the menace of drug abuse.
He assured the readiness of Gov. Mai Mala Buni to work closely with any security outfit for peace and security of the state.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
