The International Monetary Fund has issued a warning about the growing risks associated with the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence in financial markets.
While AI’s potential to enhance trading efficiency, improve risk management, and deepen market liquidity is widely acknowledged, the IMF cautioned that these advancements could lead to heightened market volatility, reduced transparency, and increased vulnerability to cyberattacks and manipulation.
“The adoption of the latest iterations of artificial intelligence by financial markets can improve risk management and deepen liquidity, but it could also make markets opaque, harder to monitor, and more vulnerable to cyberattacks and manipulation risks.”
In its latest Global Financial Stability Report, the IMF highlighted how AI is already playing a significant role in quantitative trading strategies, with hedge funds, investment banks, and other market participants leveraging advanced algorithms to process vast amounts of data and execute trades at lightning speed. The fund stated that this has led to quicker market adjustments and greater efficiency in handling large trades.
However, AI’s rapid processing power also raises concerns over “flash crash” events, where market prices experience extreme fluctuations within short timeframes, such as the May 2010 flash crash in US equities.
The IMF’s report stressed that while AI-driven trading promises to revolutionise capital markets, its rise presents significant challenges. The report noted that AI’s ability to instantly analyse massive datasets, including unstructured information like news and social media content, could lead to even more unpredictable market movements, particularly during periods of stress or uncertainty.
