The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has escalated as 83 members have taken the party’s state chairman, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and others to court over the conduct of the state congress.
The aggrieved members, led by Lambert Eze, filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Owerri, challenging the outcome of the August 31, 2024 congress, which produced Nwachukwu and other state executives.
In the suit marked FHC/OW/CS/51/2025 and filed by their counsel, K.U. Alisigwe of Ononaku Chambers, Owerri, the plaintiffs allege the exercise was marred by irregularities, including the unlawful exclusion of duly elected delegates from Ideato North and Ideato South local government areas.
According to the plaintiffs, the alleged exclusion breached both the PDP constitution and provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, rendering the congress “unlawful, null, and void.”
They are seeking an order to nullify the exercise, restrain the current officials from functioning in their positions, and mandate the conduct of a fresh congress that includes all qualified delegates.
Also joined in the suit are the PDP national leadership and 10 others, among them the caretaker chairmen for Ideato North and South, Hon. Chris Ozoemenam and Hon. Dr. Sylvester Durukwuaku.
