GUNMEN killed seven leaders from the Umucheke community in Okwe, located in the Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, yesterday night.

Residents reported that the attackers targeted the victims during a meeting at the home of the community’s president general, who was also among those murdered.

The horrific incident was confirmed today by the Imo State Police Command.

Police spokesman Henry Okoye stated that Commissioner of Police Danjuma Aboki described the incidence as tragic and expressed the command’s sorrow over it.

He stated that an investigation is underway to identify the perpetrators behind this heinous act and to ensure they are brought to justice.

Just last week, gunmen ambushed and killed four policemen in the Irete community along Onitsha Road in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

Sources revealed that the policemen were attacked while conducting a stop-and-search operation in the area.

This incident adds to the ongoing wave of violence against security personnel and innocent civilians by non-state actors in Imo State and the broader South-East region, which has faced numerous gun-related attacks in recent years.
